How to pack your stuff
Moving house can be both exciting and overwhelming. Whether you're upsizing, downsizing, or relocating, the process of packing can feel like a daunting task. But with a little planning and some practical tips, you can make the experience far smoother and more organised.
Here’s how to pack your belongings efficiently – without the stress.
Start Early
Don’t leave packing until the last minute. Start as early as possible, even if it's just doing a bit each day. Begin with rooms or items you use the least – for example, the loft, garage, or seasonal items like Christmas decorations and summer clothes.
Giving yourself plenty of time helps you avoid panic and gives you the chance to sort through your belongings properly.
Declutter as You Go
There’s no better time to have a clear-out. As you pack, ask yourself: Do I really need this? Donate, sell, or recycle anything you no longer use or want – it means fewer boxes to move and less clutter in your new home.
Be ruthless. There’s no point packing things just to unpack and re-store them in your next loft or cupboard.
Get the Right Packing Materials
Invest in good-quality boxes in a range of sizes, along with packing tape, bubble wrap, and marker pens. You might also find wardrobe boxes helpful for clothes, or specialist boxes for electronics or crockery.
Avoid overloading boxes – heavy ones are more likely to break (and harder to lift). Instead, mix lighter items like cushions or towels with heavier ones like books.
Label Everything Clearly
Label each box with the room it belongs to and a brief summary of its contents – for example, Kitchen – Plates & Glasses or Bedroom 2 – Winter Jumpers. It’ll save you so much time and confusion at the other end.
You could even colour-code your boxes by room using coloured tape or stickers.
Pack an Essentials Box
Keep one or two boxes aside for your essentials – items you’ll need straight away at your new home. Think kettle, tea bags, toilet roll, phone chargers, a change of clothes, toiletries, important documents, and basic cleaning supplies.
Keep these boxes with you on the day of the move or label them clearly as Open First.
Protect Breakables Properly
Wrap fragile items like glassware, crockery and ornaments in bubble wrap or newspaper. Use towels or bedding to pad out boxes and prevent items from shifting during the move.
Don’t forget to mark these boxes as Fragile on multiple sides.
Take Photos of Electronics
If you’re dismantling TV units, computers or other electronics, take photos of the cable setup before unplugging them. It’ll make reassembly at the new property much easier and less frustrating.
Final Thought
Packing doesn’t have to be a nightmare. With a bit of planning, the right materials, and a calm approach, you’ll be surprised how smoothly it can go.
